Afternoon Delight

His voice is warm and comforting, like a bowl of homemade oatmeal on a winter's morn. His words are as sweet as rhubarb pie, and his face is a doughy mass. Anyway you slice it, Garrison Keillor is delicious. He's like the Barry White of the Midwest. But instead of singing songs about how he wants to love his baby just a little bit more, Keillor spins soft, homey yarns about bake sales, fishing trips and apple-cheeked children ice-skating on a frozen pond. His immensely popular Prairie Home Companion has been bringing faithful radio audiences the weekly news from Lake Wobegon for nearly 30 years. But despite his infamously gentle delivery, Keillor's Homegrown Democrat ruffled more than a few proud eagle feathers down at the Minnesota Republican Party when it was published in 2004. The GOP seemed to take umbrage with supposed characterizations of Republicans as, among other things, a bunch of "faith-based economists," "freelance racists" and "ninja dittoheads." Provided he doesn’t get held up at the airport for being on the "No Fly" list, you’ll be able to spend "An Afternoon With Garrison Keillor" in Wesley Hall at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Admission is free. A $10 box lunch is available immediately following the event by reservation only. Call 214-523-2256.
Wed., Sept. 27, 11 a.m.
