Bukowski goes Modern

The Magnolia at the Modern is an ongoing series featuring recently released, critically acclaimed films, and this time around they present the Charles Bukowski boozefest Factotum. Adapted from a 1975 novel of the same name, the story centers on Hank Chinaski, the author's alter-ego author who engages in dead-end part-time jobs, nowhere women, the horse track and writing. While Bukowski holds a reputation of being a down-and-out drunk, it is difficult to imagine a legitimate drunk being as prolific. The author of novels, many short stories and even more poems, he can take credit for being the author who introduced this non-poetry fan to poetry. His writings are direct slices of life, documenting faded glory for those that never had a chance to begin with. Substance abuse and self-abuse figure in heavily while protagonists steadily extend the middle finger in the midst of their own loser-ness. Stories of this sort tend to appeal to a certain bent of character that would chose sticky, smoky dives, but the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., will do nicely. Screenings are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 817-738-9215 or visit themodern.org.
