In 1999, out of the shadowy darkness of Indiana University came Jared Fogle and his 60-inch pants. Jared "The Subway Guy" quickly became a new hero to dieters looking for a new way. In a single year, on two hoagies a day, Fogle slimmed down from a dangerous 425 pounds to a healthy-yet-non-threatening 190. He's since become a spokesperson for Subway, starring in countless commercials and singing the sandwich company's praises all over America. You may not remember his last name, but "Jared, the Subway guy" is as famous as the Pillsbury Dough Boy. In a 2004 CBS interview, Fogle recalled the days before his dramatic weight loss: "I just wanted to walk in a room and have no one know I'm even there. Now, it's sort of gone 360 degrees." Fogle may have become a corporate shill, but his success has inspired thousands to get fit. Fogle's book turns his unconventional weight-loss strategy into a self-help manual for healthier living. Its title (Jared, The Subway Guy: Winning Through Losing: 13 Steps for Turning Your Life Around) could stand to lose a few pounds. Jared Fogle discusses and signs his book 7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble, 616 Preston Royal Shopping Center. Admission is free. Call 214-363-0924.
Wed., Oct. 4, 7 p.m.
