Stealing Arts

Nab an original work...legally

While other little girls were perhaps prompted to direct their affections toward the likes of Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp or Joey Lawrence, I was raised with more discerning tastes. I had no need for brat-pack tomfoolery; movie night at our house meant a screening of the 1963 classic The Great Escape. That's 172 minutes of Steve McQueen, the man's man of men's men. A great film, indeed, but once I saw The Thomas Crown Affair, I knew art thieves were the men for me. McQueen was just so classy. So sexy. So expect my heart to be all aflutter at the Emergency Artist's Support League's annual Art Heist fund-raiser at South Side on Lamar, where folks pay $200 and are given 90 seconds to steal a piece of art of their choosing while others look on. OK, so it's not exactly dodging laser motion-detectors, but it's better than just writing a check and loading up a Rembrandt. About 150 local artsts have donated work for the heist, so there will be plenty to choose from. If you're just there to watch (sicko) it's $25, which includes two drinks and valet parking. The event lasts from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the South Side building, 1409 S. Lamar St. Tickets are available at easl.us.
Sat., Sept. 30, 6-10 p.m.
