Snicket drags Merritt to the boonies

The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs forever cemented Stephin Merritt's place among indie-rock royalty, earning countless spots on collegiate mix tapes with songs like "I Don't Want to Get Over You," "Papa Was A Rodeo" and "Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits" ("Let's pretend we're bunny rabbits/let's do it all day long"). Daniel Handler is an occasional Merritt sideman (on accordion and percussion) and accomplished author. You might know him better by his alias, Lemony Snicket. Together they're The Gothic Archies, and they've taken to the road to celebrate the release of Lemony's final book, The End, as well as their long-awaited soundtrack to all 13 volumes of A Series of Unfortunate EventsThe Tragic Treasury. This weekend they'll visit North Texas for two very special performances of "For Crying Out Loud: A reading by Lemony Snicket with music by The Gothic Archies, featuring Lemony Snicket on percussion." Catch the duo 5 p.m. Friday at Barnes & Noble (2601 Preston Road, Suite 2104; Call 972-668-2820) in Frisco, or make the drive to Waxahachie Saturday, where the terrible twosome takes the stage at the Waxahachie High School Fine Arts Building, 1000 N Highway 77 (The concert begins at 3 p.m. followed by a book signing at Hastings, 791 N Highway 77; Call 806-677-1501). Space is extremely limited for both events, so show up early. Visit lemonysnicket.com.
