Drowning in It

All right, I admit it. If Patrick Swayze shows up in a movie on cable, I will watch it. Dirty Dancing, Road House, Three Wishes, Black Dog—seen it, seen it, seen it, seen it. How can someone be so bad and yet so good? Chalk it up to Swayze magic. However, I've just never been able to sit through To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, mostly because my affinity for Patrick Swayze's acting is only exceeded by my hatred for John Leguizamo—or as I like to call him, the Latino Gilbert Gottfried. But if you're one of the many people who sat through the movie and enjoyed it, you might want to head out to the Sanders Theatre, 1300 Gendy St. in Fort Worth, to catch the off-Broadway hit As Bees in Honey Drown. Written by Wong Foo screenwriter Douglas Carter Beane, the play tells the story of Evan Wyler, a young author who gets caught up in the glamorous life after meeting one Alexa Vere de Vere, a socialite who wants him to write a screenplay based on her life.
