They definitely think they're the Beatles now. Once the most reckless, dissonant, Texas alt-guitar monster, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead no longer sounds like Interscope's rebellious intern. On the new So Divided, an identity-crisis set of stripped-down edgy pop, mediocre lush balladry, with only occasional glimpses of their once-uncontrollable nihilist fire, they sound right at home in the Wal-Mart buzz bin. That said, Trail of Dead has never disappointed live, and if they happen to play "A Perfect Teenhood," watch out for flying gear. Seattle openers the Blood Brothers may very well be the ultimate "screamo" rig, but they get major props for major intensity and for having Fugazi's Guy Piciotto produce their newest album, Young Machetes.
