ˇAsk a Mexican!

Note to readers: The following is a serious, stat-saturated column. I promise more dwarf- and Dirty Sanchez-related questions next week!

Dear Mexican,

A recent study by the Pew Hispanic Center reveals the following:

·Hispanics are four times more likely than non-Hispanics to receive welfare.

·Hispanics account for three-quarters of the increase in poverty in the U.S.A.

·45 percent of Hispanic children are born out of wedlock.

·Hispanic women are 2.54 times more likely than white women to have abortions.

·Hispanic men are nine times more likely than white men to beat their partners.

· Hispanics are three times more likely than whites to die of AIDS and are four times more likely to die of tuberculosis.

·Hispanics are twice as likely to be incarcerated than non-Hispanics and are 3.8 times more likely to be incarcerated for murder.

·Hispanic youths are 19 times more likely to be in gangs than whites.

·Hispanics are three times more likely than non-Hispanics to drop out of high school.

·55 percent of Mexican-Americans consider themselves to be Mexican first.

Why would Americans want more of THAT?

—Round 'em Up, Ringo

Dear readers,

Many gabachos and the occasional wab send me lists of "facts" supposedly gathered by respectable organizations that purport to tell it like it is about Mexicans. Problem is, these lists are riddled with deceptions, unverified assertions and outright lies and are often falsely attributed. Take the one Ringo cites. The Pew Hispanic Center never commissioned this "recent study"—most of the findings come from a September report titled Hispanics: A Statistical Portrait, commissioned by the New Century Foundation. Through their journal American Renaissance, the Virginia nonprofit publishes research papers and essays that focus on the depravities of minorities—historically blacks but increasingly Mexicans. AReditor Jared Taylor operates under the sheen of academia, but organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League have exposed him as a notorious fact-skewer who isn't above cavorting with neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers; Taylor once wrote he publishes AR to "alert whites to the crisis of dispossession they face and to encourage them to act now in defense of the things they love."

But on to the stats. The charge of spousal abuse comes from a March 2004 AR article that offers no source. Statistical Portraitdevotes a section to poverty but doesn't claim that Hispanics account for three-quarters of the increase in American poverty; in fact, U.S. Census figures released earlier this year for 2005 show only an increased poverty rate for Asians. The factoid regarding illegitimate births was published in a 2005 National Center for Health Statistics overview, and the Statistical Portraitadds that it "increased by 91 percent" between 1980 and 2000; what the Statistical Portrait doesn't tell you is that the illegitimacy rate for all Americans increased by 141 percent during the same time period and for whites at a promiscuous 148 percent—nearly one and a half times more than Hispanics.

I could go on, but ustedes get the picture. Stats are like Mexicans: You can make them do whatever you like as long as you provide room, board and sexy magazines. Besides, immigrants in the United States have historically been amoral, disease-ridden wretches (think of those dirty Norwegians of yore), so why should Mexicans be any different?

As Director of Coventry Place, the first organization in Texas which provided services for unwed Mothers, I am in the unique position to actually know the stats on some of these allegations: 1. Welfare if provided 90% + for Blacks, with Caucasians 2nd and Latinos, a distant 3rd; 2. Latino women have the LEAST percentage of out-of-wedlock births with Blacks comprising 80% +, Caucasians 2nd and Latinos, again a distant 3rd; 3. Abortions are most prevalent among Caucasian women, with both Blacks and Latinos comprising a very small percentage; 4. Murder rates are highest among Blacks as are all categories of violent crimes. However, Latinos have the least political clout and are therefore, most likely to be harassed by law enforcement. 5. 90% of people living in poverty are single-moms. As Latinos have the least out-of-wedlock births and divorce rates, their stat on this issue is totally illogical. 6. Blacks constitute the highest percentage of aids-related deaths; just looking around Latinos seem to represent the smallest percentage of this stat as well. 7. The only statistic which even remotely seems close to target is the Latino high-school drop-out rate. This 'Letter' must have been written by a Republican. Why any Latino would vote Republican is beyond my comprehension.

Although some of the "factoids" have dubious sources or are suffering from statistical "massaging" - the ones you failed to touch - aren't so incorrect: However, according to the Latino National Political Survey, the majority of respondents indicated that they defined their identities in terms of place of origin. Among those of Mexican origin who were born in the United States, 62 percent identified themselves as Mexican; 28 percent as Hispanic or Latino; and ten percent as American (P. Kivisto, Americans All, pp. 386-387). Just one-in-ten Hispanic high school dropouts has a General Educational Development (GED) credential, widely regarded as the best “second chance” pathway to college, vocational training and military service for adults who have not graduated from high school. By contrast, two-in-ten black high school dropouts and three-in-ten white high school dropouts have a GED, according to a Pew Hispanic Center analysis of newly available educational attainment data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2008 American Community Survey. The relatively low level of GED credentialing among Hispanic high school dropouts is especially notable because Hispanics have a much higher high school dropout rate than do blacks or whites. Some 41% of Hispanics ages 20 and older in the United States do not have a regular high school diploma, versus 23% of comparably aged blacks and 14% of whites. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a serious threat to the Hispanic/Latino community. Hispanics/Latinos* comprise 15% of the U.S. population but accounted for 17% of all new HIV infections occurring in the United States in 2006. During the same year, the rate of new HIV infections among Hispanics/Latinos was 2.5 times that of whites. In 2006, HIV/AIDS was the fourth leading cause of death among Hispanic/Latino men and women aged 35–44. We can only imagine the reason why you did not touch on all of the points is that you quickly learned the facts were predominantly supported by any and all available sources you could muster. So why not just touch on the few that were mildly skewed and hope the readers won't investigate your fraudulent attempt at journalism? Regardless, the facts are out there. And it only took about 15-20 minutes on Google to locate the above sources - including the Pew study you said didn't cover the factoid. Well, it most certainly does. Your article is disingenous and dishonest at best. But that's what racism does. It blinds you to reality.
