Horse Honor

Peptoboonsmal. At first it sounds like a child's nonsense word. But the multi-syllable proper noun means the world to author Elaine Hall. Peptoboonsmal is the name of a cutting horse, one specifically chosen by her husband, Larry Hall, to be the future of their horses' stock. Larry singled Pepto out in 1995. Since then the horse has established a solid legacy, winning the National Cutting Horse Association World Championship Futurity and commanding high stud fees. Only Larry never lived to see his pride and joy fulfill its potential—battling a severe bipolar disorder, he took his own life in 1996. Hall's book Loving Larry: A Tribute to the Lady Who Named Peptoboonsmal, is a frank look at how they struggled with Larry's disease, how Nancy struggled with his death, and how she found redemption through equine inspiration. Nancy signs the book 6 p.m. Friday at Fort Worth's Cowgirl Hall of Fame, 1720 Gendy St. Call 817-336-4475.
Fri., Dec. 8, 6 p.m.
