Mind Reading

Law and Order taught us to question lie-detector tests. Since we know polygraph results can be unreliable, scientists are digging deeper (thanks to brain imaging and neurotechnology) to show us the truth. Cool, right? Not so much—now we have to deal with the ethical problems of tapping into people's brains. I, for one, have seen enough sci-fi movies to know that invading someone's mind can cause a whole world of trouble. But as far as experts go, Dr. Judy Illes, who has more letters and titles behind her name than you can shake a stick at, is bringing us a mouthful of a lecture to explain the "Ethics of Brain Imaging: Authenticity, Bluffing and the Privacy of Human Thought." The lecture takes place 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Jonsson Performance Hall at the University of Texas at Dallas, 800 W. Campbell Road in Richardson. Admission is free.
