Dressed to Impress

Walk through Meadows of Balenciaga

The next time you're strolling through NorthPark Center, check out the society ladies scooping up the $300 jeans and $700 sandals. What are they wearing? Probably a pair of Juicy Couture sweats. Maybe their "crappy" pair of $300 jeans from last year. The privileged folk seem to be the ones leading the way in shabby chic. But there was a time when ladies sported skirts and heels for a trip to Neiman's. That was in the heyday of fashion—the '50s and '60s, when haute couture ruled. The king of haute is Cristobal Balenciaga, and you can pay homage this week to his unrivaled, oft-imitated fashions at the first U.S. exhibition of his designs in more than 20 years. Balenciaga and His Legacy runs Sunday through May 27 at the Meadows Museum, 5900 Bishop Blvd. at Southern Methodist University. Admission is $8, but free for students, kids under 12 and faculty. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays; noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Visit meadowsmuseumdallas.org.
