Belly Up

It's really pathetic what passes for "girl power" these days. Like those Cheetah Girls—anybody with a 5-to-11-year-old daughter probably knows what I mean—as if singing and dancing around in silly costumes is somehow empowering. And Barbie? That dip is as dumb as ever. Even a badass like Courtney Love has been reduced to punch line status. Is this where modern feminism has gotten us? Are stuffy Hillary Clinton and word-perfect Nancy Pelosi the best we can hope to aspire to? Whither Hera, Athena, Aphrodite? Thanks to a partnership between the Himalayan-oriented Rubin Museum of Art in New York and the Crow Collection of Asian Art, Female Buddhas: Women of Enlightenment in Himalayan Art will be on display this Friday through August 27. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and Thursdays until 9 p.m. at the Crow Collection, 2010 Flora St. Visit crowcollection.org.
