Ten Paces

See guns a-blazin' in Fort Worth

He was straight O.G., out of Grayson County. He pimped, gambled, dressed like a dandy, sold intoxicants—sometimes illegally—and killed, killed, killed. Turn the clock forward 100 years or so, and Old West gambler and gunslinger Luke Short probably would have won a Grammy for best rap artist. There won't be two turntables and a microphone, but the 120th anniversary re-enactment of the 1887 shootout between Short and former Fort Worth lawman Jim Courtright outside the White Elephant Saloon will feature singer Bodie Powell performing cowboy ballads beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The gunplay, with actors from the troupe The Gunfighters, starts at 7 p.m., and Powell plays again from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The White Elephant is located at 106 E. Exchange Ave. in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Call 817-624-9712 or visit whiteelephantsaloon.com.
