Soup's On

Empty Bowls takes an artful approach

Sometimes simple ideas have astonishing power. In 1990, students at a high school in Michigan were trying to find a way to raise money for a food drive. Their art teacher gave them an idea for a class project. The students made ceramic bowls, invited paying guests for a simple meal of soup and bread, and then asked them to keep the bowls as a reminder of hunger around the world. It was so successful that other groups took up the idea. Since then, Empty Bowls events have been held around the world to raise funds to combat hunger. Last year, Fort Worth's Empty Bowls attracted more than 1,000 people and sold out weeks in advance. This year, top Fort Worth chefs will create soups and desserts that will be served in bowls of ceramic, wood, metal or glass created by Texas artisans, including the Texas Potters & Sculptors Guild, The Wood Turners of North Texas, Hart Street Pottery and The Pottery Studio. The event benefits the Tarrant Area Food Bank and takes place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Round Up Inn in Will Rogers Memorial Banquet Hall. Tickets are $25, sold in advance only by calling 817-332-9177 or online at tafb.org.
Fri., Feb. 16, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
