American Idiot

All caps and fist pumps

Ladies and gentlemen, he's your reality TV hunk of shorn head and 5 o'clock shadow. He's the man who was hell-bent on making even the music of Cash and Manilow sound like that of a brooding "er" band. He's your Am-errrr-ican Errr-dol, Chris Daughtry!

After enduring Daughtry's sordid takes on the abridged pop "classics" on season five of American Idol, we feel it's only fair to give his post-prime-time release—an eponymous album from his full band named, ahem, DAUGHTRY (yeah, it's all caps)—a quick listen. With our 30-second song reviews we'd also like to offer our expert predictions regarding Daughtry's behavior during Monday night's Gypsy Tea Room performance.

"It's Not Over": A skosh less offensive than Nickelback's "Photograph" and a bit like Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me" on steroids.

Show prediction: During the breakdown, Daughtry will double-clasp the microphone and possibly offer a genuflection.

"Used To": Perfect song for the "running to catch up with love interest leaving country" scene in a teen romance. Not a movie, mind you. Play while you're reading Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Show prediction: Lots of bending over to caress the hands of camisoled blondes. And a hand to the sky.

"Home": Actually, a fairly impressive vocal performance. Of course, the sentimental lyrics are a touch too pussy, but this guy is totally secure in expressing his emotions.

Show prediction: Hand over heart. Emotional wipe of the face. A single tear.

"Feels Like Tonight": Nice show of range. Driving and melodic and near poppy...which means this could be the next theme song for a CW young adult series. Royalties, Daughtry, royalties.

Show prediction: Will move on to caress the hair of a camisoled blonde.

"Breakdown": Honestly, Daughtry has fantastic control over his falsetto. It's just a shame that he had to channel Hoobastank to showcase it. The reason is you, Chris. Remember that.

Show prediction: Splayed, emotive hand gesture on the high notes. (It's all right, man. Just go with it. Really feel it.) The girls in the audience will also do this as they sing along and suck down vodka-and-Red Bulls.

"There and Back Again": Ah, now there's the Fuel Daughtry knows, loves...and turned down for the frontman gig. A bit oversexed, with the driving drums and guitars sears, the boyfriends will tolerate the album and show for this rock-out.

Show prediction:Stomping to the front of the stage, Big D just might pull the ol' mike straight up/slight back bend move as he holds out "agaaaaaain."

"All These Lives": Kroeger, 'Stank, Staind, Kroeger, Kroeger, 'Stank, Lachey, 'Stank, Kroeger, jazz hands.

Show prediction: "No, you ain't" wave of hand. If he's got a wife-beater on, it will be on display by this point.

Encore prediction: Really it would be for the Idol fans, but Daughtry might claim it an homage to a late, great musician: "I Walk the Line." That, or Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." Could go either way.

uh... are you people serious? I was laughing at this great review... then I read the comments. You are all pathetic losers. Sit back and consume the corporate milk from Satan's tit. "He's topped the charts for weeks!"... so fucking what? Those charts were created for worthless sheep like you. Bravo on the review. At least the author understands this "music" is rehashed crap for the masses to consume.

  • Mary 03/06/2007 8:14:00 PM

You are so completely clueless. Your attempt at humor has failed miserably and you are left looking like an idiot. DAUGHTRY will have more success in one year than you will have in your entire lifetime. Probably not a good idea to pick fun at DAUGHTRY, Taylor Hicks, maybe but not DAUGHTRY.

  • Kim 03/05/2007 10:18:00 PM

Are you serious?? Talk about an idiot!! Take a look in the mirror would ya!! And for pete sakes stop making your jealousy so obvious!! I hope you feel better now that you've gotten all that off your chest.

  • Holly 03/05/2007 7:22:00 PM

Wow...you have it all figured out don't you? Let me simply say that green is NOT your color!! I know it must kill you to think of all the hot chicks are dying over Chris Daughtry...I can't imagine the babes you get being the BIG writer for a local paper...lol

  • Rae 02/24/2007 4:42:00 PM

Don't quit your day job, Merritt. This is your day job? Condolences.

  • Sylvia 02/21/2007 4:03:00 PM

I don't think anyone could have put it better than Gina. I just keep thinking of Elvis when he first started. Look how much better he got as time went by. Chris is great now and will only get better. Give the guy a break.

  • ashley 02/21/2007 1:46:00 AM

that was SOO mean i cant believe people can say such rude things the CD is amazing and you have no idea what you are saying.

  • Kalan 02/20/2007 6:33:00 PM

Good morning, Everyone has his or her own opinion, and you of course are fully entitled to yours. But then, so am I, the difference being that yours is in 'print' and by that very fact has more of a chance of projecting a negative wiewpoint than mine will in extolling the positive side. Your 'take' on the DAUGHTRY (YES ALL CAPS) cd and performance would seem to be completely at odds with country-wide opinion. His concerts, almost without exception are SOLD OUT, his cd is on its way to 2 million sold ( a record breaker FYI) and you should have taken more than 30 seconds to really listen to the lyrics & music, you owe it to yourself. Forget the fact that he first appeared in the public eye on a much-maligned reality show and see him for what he is, a person with a great voice, great music, wonderful song-writing abilities, a tremendous respect for the fans who have helped in his well-deserved rise to the top of the charts and a love of family that transcends it all.

  • Debbie 02/20/2007 5:31:00 PM

I have never understood why reporters think that ANYONE cares about what THEY think, about things like this! Are you all THAT arrogant!? Your opinions do not matter....to anyone.

  • Curtis 02/20/2007 5:27:00 PM

Hilarious article! Music has become so pre-fabricated and generally soul-less. C'mon people... if you're willing to be force-fed like cattle, don't complain to a writer when he satirizes you. Y'all's over-defensiveness is a bit telling, isn't it?

  • Anonymous 02/20/2007 2:56:00 PM

That whole article was rude and uncalled for. There are hundreds of thousands of people that would totally disagree with you. Hmmm... sounds like jealousy is kicking in, eh? You want what DAUGHTRY (yes, in all caps!) has, right? Good luck to you, dear! I wish you the best! Always yours, ANONYMOUS!!!

  • sharon 02/20/2007 1:20:00 PM

I guess someone had to put a negative spin out there somewhere huh? What's your problem man? Jealous cause you don't have an entourage of blonds screaming for you? Or just pissed off that you got stuck writing the entertainment piece for the paper? IT's ok really. See, Daughtry is not going anywhere. He'll be around just like Bon Jovi and Joni Cash so you'll still have a job writing about him in years to come!

  • Tyramisu 02/20/2007 6:26:00 AM

You have a right to your opinion, but your opinion sucks!!! Do you live in a cave? This guy is awesome, talented, and loved by millions as proven in the number of cd sold already and only one single has been released so far...you will eat your words...remember I said so

  • Elizabeth 02/20/2007 2:03:00 AM

What a positive review! Glad you think so much of Chris Daughtry. His cd has been at the top for weeks on end, so even without your support, and with your sarcasm, I don't think he has anything to worry about.

  • Michele 02/19/2007 4:13:00 PM

You are an idiot. DAUGHTRY is already big with just one single out. The album has already sold 1.6 million with only one single out. Perhaps you would be happier with listening to Taylor Hicks who is #87 on the billboard charts and quite possibly the worst selling idol ever.

  • Daughtry Fan 02/19/2007 2:04:00 PM

Sorry, you couldn't have gotten this more wrong! It's obvious that you are biased by the whole "American Idol" thing. DAUGHTRY has proven to their fans, time & time again that they have what it takes to make it to the top & stay there. As for your encore predication, NO WAY! DAUGHTRY is a band with their own material and Chris does not need to repeat any of his AI performances. I hope you get a chance to check out the live show, I believe you will be eating your words!

  • Kim 02/19/2007 1:56:00 PM

Your an idiot. As far as your expert predictions the only thing I can see that your an expert on is being an idiot.

  • daniro 02/19/2007 9:53:00 AM

Dear Idiot Reviewer: Sorry but I took this article as an insult to his fans and we are talking hundreds of thousands strong. Daughtrys depth & breadth goes unparallel in todays music industry. They are refreshing and bring back heart and soul to rock n roll. I went to the Daughtry concert and it was quite reminicent of this up and coming band that I once saw at a club in the 80's...you may know them...Bon Jovi. Yes, Daughtry will be just as BIG and an important part of rock music history. Daughtry will undoubtedly become rock iconic culture with universal appeal to generations for generations. Who is smiling now?

  • hobbes2120 02/19/2007 8:21:00 AM

now that was entertainment. i liked this article. not much of a fan of anyone who sings opera rock. i have to admit though, one of the better people to come out of idol, but that being said, it doesn't say much for idol. guess im just use to angst in rock and this new breed of rockers is just not much for the pallete. just got done watching the video for "its not over", and heard it once in the car. the only thing that stands out is that annoying sound that singers the likes of teeny pop belt out. that fluxuation in voice that becomes more filler than anything, and less musical content. im just waiting for the day when one of these pop artists, daughtry included, to put out a song where all they do is carry one note and scatter the shit out of it, while their genre' of music reverbs in the background. aaaaAAAEEOOOEEAAAAOEEEEOOAAAAEEEEEOOOOOOOoooooo, yay pop music.

  • ladykarensea 02/19/2007 5:45:00 AM

I can't quite figure out if your review is favorable or not. You seem rather snotty and uppity and yet, you also seemed to like some of Chris' songs. Your rather sour predictions are just that..."sour". Lemme know how you like the show. Karen..a Chris fan.

  • Gina 02/18/2007 5:57:00 PM

You have to remember that when you make fun of Daughtry, you are making fun of the fans. I'm sorry that we do NOT have your wit or brilliant sense of music to recognize what is palatable or not. I'm so sorry that our musical tastes is not in accord with you. And I'm so sorry that you can't forgive Daughtry for being in American Idol, letting your prejudices against a show color the talent of Daughtry. He has a voice that makes this old rocker feel again. He has captured the attention of young and old alike. This old rocker who hates downtown Dallas, headbanged and danced again, reminding her of old concerts - reminding her of what fun it is to hear a live performance full of energy and emotion. I had a blast, I'm sorry you didn't. Would it make you feel better to know that Daughtry has 10 years of experience singing with his bar at every honky tonk, sports bar or wherever they would hire a young musician with a family to support? Does that validate him more in your eyes, and forgive the horrible indiscretion of appearing in American Idol so his voice could be heard? The public has, maybe one day the critics will too.
