The phoenix flight of instrumental rock outfit Red Sparowes continuously rises and falls, peaks and dismantles, with beauty and grace. The quartet, which features Isis guitarist Cliff Meyer, Battle of Mice and Neurosis member Josh Graham and Greg Burns of Halifax Pier fame, released one of the most breathtakingly beautiful records of 2006, Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun. The record is an epic tale of struggle and rebirth expressed through musical movements that carry the type of physical weight of the ocean's waves At the Soundless Dawn. The opening act—Austin sextet My Education, whose "Snake in the Grass" was reconstructed by the Sparowes for their latest release, Moody Dipper—flies in a similar fashion. The group, which recently composed a score for Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, the 1927 silent film by F.W. Murnau, creates catastrophic and heavily orchestrated crescendos that teeter between moments of peaceful ambiance and rousing turbulence. No vocals needed, the music speaks for itself.
