I was at the veggie aisle in a local grocery store the other day and came across some fava beans. The first thing I thought of was Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. The second thing I thought was, "I wonder if anyone actually eats these?" I was with my uncle and aunt at the time, so I asked my uncle if he had ever eaten fava beans. He just looked at me and did his best impression of Lecter's famous line in the movie, complete with that quick inhale/slurping noise. Actually, he's not my uncle yet as he hasn't married my aunt, but if the look she gave him after that incident is anything to go by, the proposal may be a hard sell. The movie is one of only three to win the top five Oscars—Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay (Adapted). The fava bean people were probably happy about it as well, although the nod of approval from a cannibal may not have been their first choice for product placement. Silence of the Lambs shows at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, at midnight Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $8.50. Visit landmarktheatres.com.
