Identifiable Beauty

It's probably because my mother happens to be in Vietnam right now for a conference, and also because my mother is a huge Frida Kahlo fan, but one of the paintings featured in Changing Identity: Recent Works by Women from Vietnam, reminds me of a Frida self-portrait. Nguyen Thi Chau Giang's piece entitled, "He Is Inside of Me," isn't quite as disturbing as the famous Mexican painter's, but it has the same quality of inner reflection and a few strategically placed trees and flowers that evoke human anatomy. Changing Identity is a mixed media exhibit that includes the work of 10 contemporary female Vietnamese artists who explore the evolving roles of women in Vietnamese society. The show is open Friday through May 27 at the Crow Collection of Asian Art, 2010 Flora St. Admission is free and the museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. And starting March 29, you can leave with a cool handbag too—the museum's Lotus Shop is selling Oovoo bags, handcrafted and embroidered in Vietnam with Western and Asian influences. They're cool folks, for real—check out samples and get more details on the show at crowcollection.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: March 23. Continues through May 27
