Rating Neilson

Before becoming a comedy legend by playing against type in classic cinematic masterpieces such as Airplane and The Naked Gun, Leslie Nielsen was a "serious actor." In fact, Nielsen has appeared in more than 200 movies and TV shows, playing everything from doctors to soldiers to the ship's captain in The Poseidon Adventure. But perhaps his finest role was in the 1956 genre-defining sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. This film is a virtual cornucopia of Freudian metaphors, especially when the big, scary, secret monster everybody has been terrified of the entire film is revealed to be a living embodiment of pure id—all mankind's basest instincts and carnal desires rolled up into one badass creature. Plus, Robbie the Robot makes his debut in this flick, as a sort of magical machine that constantly manufactures bourbon from scratch (seriously). Get spaced out on the Forbidden Planet midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theater, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. Call 214-764-9106.
