When vocalist/drummer Francis Mark moved from behind his drum kit to replace departing lead screamer Benjamin Perry, hopes were high that this Long Island quintet was going to delve further into the melodic side Mark brought to the band. The group's latest effort, Holding a Wolf by the Ears, while suffering from an absolute dearth of humor, successfully walks the fine line between comprehensibility and chaos. Songs such as "Death Kult Social Club" and "Sensory Deprivation Adventure" are unyielding and earsplitting expressions of angst and anxiety made fresh by a sense of melody that escapes many in the genre. By refusing to allow the glum and strident nature of the metal scene to infect them entirely, From Autumn to Ashes gracefully escapes from between the proverbial rock and a hard place.
