Comic Therapy

Richard Lewis freaks out in Lakewood

There are some people who don't really need to be onstage. Like those people on subways who are able to scream to everyone on a crowded train. They may have the ability to quell their stage fright and speak before a large group of people, but that doesn't mean they should be onstage. Then there are those who know they are damaged and decide to pursue a career in entertainment. This is where Richard Lewis fits in. I've always seen him as somewhat of an anomaly. Sure he's funny, but all he does is recount anecdotes from his decades of therapy. This isn't anything new; Woody Allen manages to squeeze out a movie a year about his neuroses. And Larry David has made a fortune retelling tales of uncomfortable situations in the Seinfeld series and more recently with Curb Your Enthusiasm (on which Lewis appears). Lewis seems to bridge the gap between Allen and David, though, being both physically and mentally neurotic. He just happens to up the ante, though, with that awful, awful hair. Richard Lewis and his hair appear with Kevin Pollack 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. Tickets are $39 to $49. Call 214-821-SHOW or 214-373-8000, or visit ticketmaster.com.
Fri., April 13, 7:30 p.m.
