I sometimes look at the kindergartners that I teach once a week—crayons shoved up their nose, dirt all over their pants, Kool-Aid lining their lips—and I think that they are lucky to be so innocent and carefree. But, as the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth points out with their latest exhibit Pretty Baby, things aren't really so simple for the kiddos. Childhood is a time where identities are in genesis, emotions are raw and social interaction can be either isolating or exhilarating. The exhibit explores these themes of childhood, sometimes with an air of innocence and sometimes through a much edgier, almost uncomfortable depiction. Friday's film series looks at it both ways with the films of Miranda July, a performance artist who is best-known for her film Me and You and Everyone We Know. That film juxtaposes themes of isolation, communication and, yes, childhood identity. Four of July's short films will be shown as well. It's not all heady subject material though; the films are part of the Modern 'Til Midnight event, which also features music and a cash bar. The event starts at 6 p.m., with the films commencing at 8 p.m. Admission is free for museum members and $10 for everyone else. Visit themodern.org for more information.
