The King and I

Elvis gets the musical treatment in Fort Worth

I think my all-time favorite Elvis Presley song has to be "In the Ghetto." It strikes a chord with me not because it's a sentimental piece with a heartfelt message, but because it's totally hilarious. My favorite part is the line where songwriter Mac Davis rhymed "runny nose" with "cold wind blows." Instant classic! Or maybe it always tickles my funny bone because Davis wrote the song about, of all places, Lubbock (I kid you not). But if the thought of someone laughing at a sad Elvis song makes you "All Shook Up," then you might be just the guy/gal to see the newest rock 'n' roll Broadway musical playing at Bass Performance Hall, Fourth and Calhoun streets in Fort Worth. All Shook Up runs through Sunday, presented by local theater company Casa Mañana. While the musical contains 24 Elvis classics, the synopsis promises it's not just another tale chronicling Presley's life. Instead, it tells the story of a girl whose dream comes true when a "guitar-playin' roustabout" shows up in her town and turns things upside down "with his hip-swivelin', lip-curlin' and sexy song singin'." Hmm. For some reason, that "roustabout" character sounds awfully familiar. For tickets (which are $30 to $79), call 817-212-4280. For more information, visit casamanana.org.
Tuesdays-Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: May 1. Continues through May 6
