One of the first times I ventured onto Swiss Avenue, I had just moved to Dallas and thought I had stumbled into a time warp. Everything was serene and quiet, there wasn't a nasty McMansion in sight, and the architecture was breathtaking. I still take the dog on a daily walk through the neighborhood so that we can appreciate the historic homes, admire fine landscaping and inflate our expectations of home ownership impossibly. Whenever my mom comes to visit, I drive her down the street and point out the Frank Lloyd Wright house, musing about the sociological implications of how Swiss delineates the haves from the have-nots. Mom wants to know who decorated the foyer that gleams behind leaded glass. Well, Mom, here's your chance. This Mother's Day, the Swiss Avenue Historic District will hold their 34th Annual Home and Gardens Tour. Residents of the area will open up their historic homes and beautifully sculpted gardens to the public, who can either meander through the street or take a bus tour. Tickets are $20 and will be available at several locations, including Whole Foods on Greenville Avenue, Central Market on Lovers Lane, and Talulah Belle in Lakewood. A champagne brunch will be held in Savage Park on Sunday, catered by Kitchen 1924. Tickets to the brunch are also $20. Call 214-821-3290 or visit sahd.org.
Sat., May 12, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., May 13, 12-6 p.m.
