Closet Cases

Like most other kids, I got my fill of cartoons every Saturday morning. In hindsight though, my television proclivities leaned toward the sitcom and somewhat frighteningly so. I remember feeling sorry for Edith Bunker because she was so meek. I was disturbed when George Jefferson would walk on British neighbor Harry's back to get the kinks out. I wondered why that robot kid in Small Wonder wasn't particularly cute. Some shows did me right without noticeable (until now) undertones. One was The Odd Couple. I never knew about the play or Neil Simon, just that this show was funny and that I could relate my OCD to Felix Unger. I saw the play finally a couple of years ago and gasped at all the subtext. Was I hearing right? Were Felix and Oscar really a closeted couple and even they didn't know it? It was all so clear and yet so shattering...because everything was innocent when we were kids. Right? Shattered. At least it was still funny.
