Just Not During the Movie

I hate being on this cinematic bandwagon where everything Pedro Almodóvar does is complete genius. But it's fairly true. And if it's not genius, then his stuff is still pretty damn good and interesting to watch. His recent Volver proved to the rest of the world that Penelope Cruz really can act (we true fans already knew that from their previous collaborations, thanks). With all the movies-in-the-park/garden/pool events out there, spend time away from the heat and mosquitoes as the Latino Cultural Center shows movies—gasp—inside. With air conditioning. They've been screening their Almodóvar Collection each Saturday with this week's feature being the Oscar-winning 2002 film, Hable con Ella, or Talk to Her for the non-Spanish speaking and sections of Farmers Branch. Nominated for best director and a winner for best screenplay, this film is probably one of his finest, as he doesn't get too out there with lingering ghosts and cross-dressing criminals but still maintains his unique quirkiness. I'd say Talk to Her is the best for the uninitiated...and sections of Farmers Branch. The screening begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Latino Cultural Center, 2600 Live Oak St. Call 214-671-0045 or visit dallasculture.org/latinocc.
Sat., July 21, 2 p.m.
