Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell is an appropriate, Bush-approved Afghanistan war hero. In his new book, Lone Survivor, the Texan lashes out at the media and questions engagement rules against killing unarmed civilians. Luttrell regrets his June 2005 decision to spare unarmed Afghani goatherds who stumbled upon his four-man SEAL team, believes mercy was something a weakling "liberal" (his word) would have shown and claims fear of negative media attention influenced his choice. His vote to obey combat rules and not murder the goatherds ultimately cost the lives of his team and 16 rescuers after the Afghanis tipped off Taliban fighters—just as he knew they would. Never mind that Taliban sympathizers later saved him. Mercy is for pussies. Luttrell signs copies of Lone Survivor 7 p.m. Thursday at Borders, 2709 N. Mesquite Drive in Mesquite. Call 972-219-5203.
