You may not be familiar with designer-to-the-stars Manuel, but you've certainly seen some of his work. Got a copy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band laying around? Manuel designed those suits. Love the Man in Black? Johnny Cash would have been the Man in Store-bought Levi's were it not for Manuel. He also designed the black leather number Elvis wore for his '68 comeback special, the white rhinestone-studded number in every Elvis impersonator's wardrobe, a pillow that eventually turned into the Stones' lip logo and the Dead's skeleton and roses insignia. The man has dressed Dolly Parton—no small task—as well as Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Robert Redford, Bob Dylan and John Travolta. He also apprenticed for famed designer Nudie Cohn, the man behind the Flying Burrito Bros.' legendary marijuana-bedecked Western suits. Friday, the man himself will appear at the 2nd annual Branded fashion show, where some of his pieces will walk the runway and be auctioned off to benefit the Careity Foundation. Tickets to the event are $200. A Manuel original will probably set you back significantly more, but at least you will be in good company. Visit careity.org.
