South Side hosts a day of arts

People are always griping that Dallas is not a "real city." You know, the suburbs, the questionable public transportation, the lack of a real center—oh, and the Republicans—all these things convince some folks that the shit ain't real. Well, if you're one of the haters, we suggest you check out the Second Annual Urban Arts Festival down at the South Side on Lamar (1409 S. Lamar), which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday. Seven bucks gets you all the centralized city lifeblood you want—booze at Absinthe, caffeine at Opening Bell, music and more booze at Bill's and Poor David's, loft dwellers zipping outdoors to walk their dogs, and, of course, tons of art.

Things kick off officially with the Live Art Experience ($7) 8 p.m. Friday. The whole weekend promises live theater, kids' activities and more. Oh, and in case you were dubious about the urban stuff, consider the words of the event's co-producer Christie Hernandez: "We are showcasing some of the hottest urban art in this premier urban setting. This will be a unique opportunity for festival-goers to immerse themselves in a completely urban experience and really get a sense for what drives and inspires urban art." So there. Sat., Sept. 8, 10 a.m.
