That's probably not the best analogy to the air pollution fight, since the closer you get to the peak, the harder it is to get oxygen. Or maybe that kind of imagery shows how high we have to climb. Either way, if you're expecting our skies to clear anytime soon, you might want to hold your breath.

Matt, thanks for covering this VERY important subject about cleaner air in Dallas. (BTW, it has NOTHING to do with global warming and EVERYTHING to do with industry finding additional revenue streams at the expense of public health.) Texas is a beautiful state with beautiful skies, and Dallas deserves better. If you drive away from Dallas, the sky is blue. Inside DFW, it's a white glare, full of dust from the cement plant stacks. These plants need to be scrubbing their output better, and/or fall under the regulations governing the handling of the toxic wastes they're burning in their furnaces. There's absolutely NO reason they should be permitted to continue burning hazardous waste outside of regulations the waste-handling industry is required to obey. They're disposing of toxic waste? They're in the waste-handling industry and subject to the same regulation.

You have the same problem that your friends at the DMN have. You try to clean up the air in Dallas by tying your arguments to a bogus premise: global warming. You claim most scientists around the world support the position that man is the principal globe warmer. Not so. Most UN scientists, environmental "activists" (read "eco terrorists"), "The Sky is Falling" media and scientifically challenged politicians are the supporters of that position. Listen carefully. If air polution is a problem then argue with science - not hysteria. I've lived in the Dallas area since 1960 and never seen or known anyone staggering around unable to breathe. There may be some of those folks out there but I've never seen them and you and the DMN have never published photos of hundreds of people in downtown Dallas walking around with masks on a la Tokyo. And once you find those folks who can't breathe make sure their problem isn't allergies rather then automobiles or cement kilns. You seldom mention that this area is one of the worst in the nation for allergens. You could probably make a good case for cleaner air without resorting to scare tactics. One of your favorite "experts" is Environmental Defense. They parlayed a fictonal book about DDT killing birds into a multimillion dollar scam that ended up killing millions of third world people, not birds.
