Aqsa Shall Receive

Outside is definitely where to be

Let's hope the third time is the charm for artist Aqsa Shakil, the Tanzanian-born Pakistani-American artist featured in the solo show I'll Be Outside. She needs this to go really well because she's had a string of bad luck lately. Shakil just received her MFA from SMU, though we all know to make it in this world, you really need a Ph.D. That 2006 Kimbrough Fund she was awarded by the Dallas Museum of Art pretty much went unnoticed (plus I heard she just spent it on clothes and IKEA). Residencies in Taos and New York only had her running back to Dallas. Her first two shows were obligingly put on by her alma maters SMU and UT Dallas, where she received her B.A. way back in 2005. Could there be a blacker cloud over this poor artist? Show some love for her latest attempt at the Brazos Gallery at Richland College, 12800 Abrams Road (There's an opening reception at 6 p.m. Friday, but leave her some nibbles in case she's hungry). Call 972-238-6339 or visit richlandcollege.edu/human/art/artGallery.htm.
Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Starts: Sept. 14. Continues through Oct. 12, 2007
