David Allan Coe falls down at the HOB

David Allan Coe's illustrious songbook is jam-packed with classic country hits like "Take This Job and Shove It," "You Never Even Called Me by My Name," and, of course, "Nigger Fucker." Seems like our good buddy Coe has a problem with his fine white ladies getting the jungle fever. In interviews Coe has tried to downplay this particularly ugly piece of his past by saying that it was all meant in good fun, his drummer is black and such accusations of racism are "against everything that I am." He even leans on that old chestnut of an excuse: Rappers say it all the time. It's all very easy to misconstrue. Take for example one of his best known songs to date, "If That Ain't Country," which features the immortal line "workin' like a nigger for my room and board." He's clearly saying that African-Americans are a hard working and industrious people. Uh-huh. To paraphrase Coe's anthem, "If that ain't a load of idiotic racist bullshit...I'll kiss your ass." David Allan Coe and his ignorant, archaic, constitutionally protected beliefs perform 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the House of Blues, 200 N. Lamar Street. Tickets are $20, $35 and $75.
