Bad Religion was always made fun of as "Ph.D. punk" when I was in high school. Their 1982 debut LP, How Could Hell Be Any Worse, however, was a trend-setting release that laid the tracks for their later albums and established their trademark style. Future releases were filled with very sophisticated three-part harmonies and an advanced use of vocabulary that made Black Flag sound like grunting cavemen by comparison. Bad Religion's lineup comprised once and future members of the "punk rock hall of fame." Guys from Minor Threat, The Circle Jerks, Samhain and The Vandals all did time with Greg Graffin and his scholars of the two-minute saga. So if you see an outbreak of T-shirts this week showing a cross with a circle-line through it, do not panic, fair Christian.
