Jack-O-Retum

It's autumn at the Arboretum and that means it's time for the Great Pumpkin Festival. I'm glad the Arboretum let us know that fall has come, because since moving to Texas I honestly don't know what time of the year it is anymore. Apparently there are nine months of summer and three months of fall. Speaking of the Great Pumpkin, do you remember the Charlie Brown Halloween TV special? Everyone would go trick-or-treating and collect the loot while Linus, trusty blankie in hand, waited in vain for the Great Pumpkin to appear. Don't be a blockhead! Take your family to the Arboretum. Besides enjoying the beauty of 150,000 flowers in bloom, there's plenty to do. You can go for a hay ride or navigate your way through the hay bale maze. Take some pumpkin-carving lessons or just watch amazing master pumpkin carvers like Gene Granata and Patrick Moser work their magic. There's also music, a costume parade, face-painting, a petting zoo and more. The Great Pumpkin Festival runs thru October 31 at the Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road.
