"They're not dead exactly"
Years ago a local artist and friend of mine introduced me to something so awesomely bad it was great and so campy the excessive gore was more funny than nauseating. The film we watched on a tiny screen via VHS tape was one of Peter Jackson's (yes, as in, Lord of the Rings director) first films, and one that got banned in Finland, Germany, South Korea and Singapore. Dead Alive, or Braindead as it is known in other countries, uses 300 liters of fake blood (according to IMDB.com) to tell the story of evil run rampant after a fatal Sumatran rat-monkey bite and a zombie-mom reign of terror. It's a gross-out film with lawnmowers, blenders and teeth doing all sorts of things you don't want to see them do and it's fanfuckingtastic. Go see Dead Alive at midnight (totally appropriate) at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, Friday and Saturday. Call 214-764-9106 or visit landmarktheatres.com. Then go rent Heavenly Creatures and watch Jackson prove his dramatic skill with another disturbing film on an entirely different level.
