La (One) Grande Dame

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a really classy evening. For one night in October, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Diana Krall collaborate in the symphony's Arts District digs, with a True Blue-themed backdrop by Todd Fiscus, decorator to the stars (the glitterati kind, not the hockey kind—although we're sure he's seen a few of those too in his history of highbrow party planning). Throw in a gourmet dinner, and it earns its "gala" label and—while it's not quite a steal—it's an evening worth the splurge.

Canada-born, California- and New York-trained singer and pianist Diana Krall has won Grammy awards for her smoky renditions of songs by Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald and other classic jazz performers. She's achieved that rare crossover appeal in her work, and in her personal life, she has added a little classic alt-rock to her world in the form of her marriage to icon Elvis Costello. Diana Krall performs 6 p.m. Saturday at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St., in the Dallas Arts District. Tickets are $1,000. Call 214-871-4065 or visit dallassymphony.com.
Sat., Oct. 13, 6 p.m., 2007
