One Man's Trash

Look what came out of the lake

From Trash to Treasure, an exhibit by the White Rock Lake Museum and Bath House Cultural Center, boasts garden gnomes, computers, a Barney piñata, a golden Buddha and a McDonald's payroll check from 1988—all found in the lake. Also exhibited is Here Today, Here Tomorrow, Styrofoam artworks by Dallas artist Linda Perry McLemore created to educate the public on Styrofoam's longevity. In other words, it's litter collected by For the Love of the Lake volunteers and some foam art. But did one of those objets d'art catch your eye? Mine too. A golden Buddha. Holy crap. They tried to distract us with a paycheck—what was minimum wage in '88, $4.75 an hour?—and foam sculptures. An obvious diversion from the true treasure. The press release doesn't say this Buddha is solid gold, but why else call it "golden"? Imagine what it's worth. I'm gonna get the blueprints through an open records request, find a way to tunnel in and steal that golden idol. Wonder what kind of alarm they have? Or maybe I'll boost it during a visit to the museum at 521 E. Lawther Dr. noon to 6 p.m. (or until 10 p.m. on nights with theater performances) Tuesdays through Saturdays through December 22.
