Holidays in Song

Hear singing elves of various sizes

Remember the days when you would shuffle into a school cafeteria, arrange yourself on those weird carpeted rafter things and sing your little off-key heart out to "Jingle Bell Rock" for the benefit of the PTA? Those were the good old days, when the Jewish kids had to sing "Silent Night" because the teacher didn't know what else to do with them, and before you realized that most of the PTA had hit happy hour before taking their seats in those miniature cafeteria stools. Those "concerts" were always rife with tension: Would that little snot Gant Grimes pull your hair the whole time you sang? Would sweet, frail Barry Fuhrman faint again this year? You just never knew. And that was the beauty of it: It was always a crapshoot. And so it surprises me that the men of the Turtle Creek Chorale, known for their pristine harmonies, would invite a legion of elementary school choir singers to join them for their annual holiday concert. Good luck with that, guys. Expect the Majestic Theater, 1925 Elm St., to be filled with the lovely, contrasting sounds of these choirs, and then imagine that those sweet angelic kids have likely put the chorale through hell. But that's what the holidays are all about, no? Children Will Listen features Christmas classics and a nod to Hanukkah festivities during its run, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets may be purchased at turtlecreek.org.
Fri., Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 9, 2 & 7:30 p.m., 2007
