Nearly 30 years ago when he was known as Jerry, Gerard Dirkx led The Telefones, one of Dallas' first and best bands to fall under the ominous new wave umbrella. Along with brothers Chris and Steve, Gerard helped shape the area music scene of the late 1970s. Songs such as "The Ballad of Jerry Godzilla" and "Rocket Rocket" were witty observations backed up by a near-punk roar that brought the band a decent local following. Such acclaim led to an ill-fated decision to move the band to Los Angeles in search of greener pastures. The Telefones returned to Texas in the '80s, but the spark was gone. In the '90s they played some high-profile reunion gigs with the Toadies, but Dirkx has gained recent attention as leader of Fat Palace, his on again, off again rock/funk combo. Throughout the years, Dirkx has always displayed a keen ear for melody and an offbeat lyrical bent that fits in well with whatever musical direction he may pursue. Here is a rare solo performance with a set list that could span a third of a century, one which offers an interesting glimpse into Dallas' tumultuous musical history and perhaps its future.
