Future Drama

Orwell's Oceania is in Frisco

Imagine living in a future society where the government could watch your every move. Phone conversations. E-mails. Computer hard drives. Nothing safe. Nothing secret. Scared yet? Well I've got news for you: The future is now. In 1948, George Orwell wrote his masterpiece of dystopian fiction, 1984. In it he painted a picture of a future society where the totalitarian government of Oceania controlled its citizenry through the use of invasive surveillance. Orwell said of his novel, "I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive. The moral to be drawn from the dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don't let it happen." If anything, Orwell failed to envision the full horror-show that was the year 1984. Big hair. Bad music. Reaganomics. And parachute pants. Gadzooks! And remember those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. God help us. The Frisco Community Center's 1984 is directed by Jason Folks and runs at The Cox Building Playhouse, 1517 Ave. H in Plano, Thursday through February 24.
