Anyone who's ever driven through the Great Plains can attest to its emptinessââmiles and miles of corn or wheat in every direction with little besides small towns, Wal-Marts, churches and fireworks stands to break the monotony. But there's certainly something to be found in all that emptinessââthey don't call it the heartland for nothing, after all. In their new book, West of Last Chance, photographer Peter Brown and author Kent Haruf attempt to find out just what that something is through a series of colorful essays and starkly beautiful images. Peter Brown's photos hang through March 22 at Photographs Do Not Bend, 1202 Dragon St. A reading and book signing featuring Brown and Haruf take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
