Furry Aspirations

Muppet kids apparently have career goals similar to those of human children. In Sesame Street Live's When Elmo Grows Up, Elmo and friends perform a musical show-and-tell about what they want to do when they grow up—even though Elmo has been a three-and-a-half year-old monster since 1985. They aspire to be forest rangers, cowboys, fairy godmothers and a TV forecasting "weather monster," pretty standard goals for kids or monsters. The only kid I knew who wanted to do something really unusual was my brother, who wanted to be a light bulb or a truck. I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fact that we settled our childhood disputes by throwing rocks at each other's heads. But anyway, nobody ever wants to grow up and make a career of, say, selling insurance, mowing lawns or typing 200 words of meandering nonsense before providing ticket information about a random Dallas-area event. Before your children grow up, take them to see When Elmo Grows Up at 7 p.m. Thursday (with additional shows through Sunday) at Nokia Theatre, 1001 Performance Place in Grand Prairie.
