Legendary Lens

See the work of John Loengard

Afterimage Gallery in the Routh Street Quadrangle is showing (and selling) the work of revered LIFE magazine photographer and editor John Loengard. Loengard, who began shooting for LIFE in 1961, has produced a broad range of work from esoteric landscapes to breaking news journalism, all of which is on the wall at Afterimage, Dallas's oldest photography gallery. "Cloud in Sydney, Nova Scotia" is a portrait of nature in abstraction. "Edward Kennedy arriving for Mary Jo Kopechne's funeral, Plymouth, PA, 1969" is a portrait of a young man in a really bad moment. Some of Loengard's best-known pictures, however, are his portraits of Georgia O’Keefe at her home at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in the late '60s. These photographs portray the famous artist in a period after the death of photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who chronicled her earlier career, and before O'Keefe's failing eyesight forced her retirement in the mid-'70s. Afterimage is also selling Loengard's book, As I See It, published in 2005 by Vendome Press. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. It is No. 141 in the Quadrangle, on the LaClede Street side. Call 214-871-9140 or visit afterimage.com/loengard.htm.
Mondays-Saturdays, 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Starts: March 14. Continues through April 29, 2008
