Carson biographer raises dough for Mayborn

By the time Kit Carson was 36 years old, he had hunted buffalo in the Great Plains, trapped beavers in the Rockies and gone deep into Mexico. He had been to the Grand Canyon, the Great Salt Lake, to the coast of Oregon—as author Hampton Sides noted, it seemed as if Carson was "present at the creation of the West." As much as Carson loved the West's unspoiled beauty, he also opened it up to expansion, perhaps unwittingly. Outside editor Hampton Sides has written the definitive book on Carson, called Blood and Thunder, and he will be in Dallas on Sunday for a fund-raiser for the University of Texas Mayborn Literary Conference. Tickets to the event, which will be held at the Brookhaven Country Club, 333 Golfing Green Drive, are $100 or $1,000 for a table of eight. For more tickets or more information call 940-565-4564.
