In 1978, two artists named Will Hipps and Richard Childers converted a circa-1916 tire factory and air-conditioning warehouse into an art gallery. They wanted to provide a place where fledgling artists could display their work without outside pressure and dealer restrictions. At the 500X, artists can spread their wings and soar to the heights of artistic prominence. So far, the endeavor seems to have worked for a number of local artists. The good people at the 500X Gallery have always had grand ambitions. Now they have a Global Ambition. The exhibit can be viewed in the Upstairs Gallery through March 30. The 500X Gallery is located at, you guessed it, 500 Exposition Ave. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; weekdays by appointment. For more information call 214-828-1111 or visit 500x.org.
