Memorable Debut

Stefan Merrill Block's debut novel, The Story of Forgetting<</b>/i>, despite receiving a rave review from Publishers Weekly, makes me nervous. First, there's the separate but slightly parallel stories of Texans Abel and Seth (old and young, respectively). Then there's a sort of fantasyland-daydream escapism. And lastly, there's Alzheimer's. To be perfectly honest, the write-ups and descriptions sound pretty spectacular—especially given this is Block's first offering to the literary public—but you see, I must offer a bit of personal background. About three nights ago I saw a certain Ryan Gosling chick-flick (which, to be fair, it so isn't) for the first freakin' time and while I'm not aiming to spoil anyone's movie watching, I blubbered like an idiot and haven't stopped thinking about it since. In short, I might go get Block to sign his two-week-old release 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble, 801 W. 15th St. in Plano, but I'll probably wait until the tears subside (screw you Nicholas Sparks) before I read it.
