Ride 'Em Cowboy

Take in a Midnight classic

Last year's efforts from Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman included Bratz and Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, both of which were major flops at the box office and were blasted by critics. Who woulda thought seeing Voight play a principal in a movie based on dolls and Hoffman play a 243-year-old toy store owner would turn out to be painful experiences? If you yearn to see these two geezers in their primes, there's no better way than to turn back the clock nearly 40 years when the two teamed up for Midnight Cowboy. The film became the only X-rated movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture before X ratings were saved for porno flicks. It's not often you'll see a Texan make his way to New York City to prostitute himself and befriend a con man named Ratso with polio. Throw in the gay cowboy aspect, and you've got Brokeback Mountain from the '60s. If you're like me and weren't even born when this classic first graced the silver screen, you can check it out as the first movie shown in the United Artists 90th Anniversary Film Festival at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane, at midnight Friday. For more information call 214-764-9106 or visit landmarktheatres.com.
