One of the best day trips this metroplex has to offer Dallas residents is to Fort Worth on the Trinity Rail Express, a few short bus connections (or a ride from a Fort Worth-based friend) and a stop at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Once there, you can stare at the architecture, courtesy of Tadao Ando, and appreciate that all that concrete and glass looks so darn pretty. You can check out the exhibits, obviously, and spend a good 30 minutes in the gift shop. You can have lunch at The CafÃ© at the Modern, whichâ€”though their menu changes frequentlyâ€”has the best flippin' pancakes I've ever tasted. And then you can catch a movie. This week's Magnolia at the Modern offering is Snow Angels, a fatalistic story of relationships in all their ugly glory. The film features Kate Beckinsale, the always-lively Amy Sedaris and Olivia Thirlby, who is best known for her role as the title character's friend in Juno. This is maybe one museum excursion where the kids are best left at home, though, as a New York Times review helpfully informs us that the film has "sex, drunkenness, swearing and murder." That'll give you something to think about on the train ride back home. Snow Angels plays at the Modern, 3200 Darnell St., at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8.50.
