American Girls

Crossing between American and Egyptian cultures, he Said girls made one deadly misstep: They fell in love

On New Year's Day, Patricia Said stood at the door of a small house in a Hispanic neighborhood of Lewisville, pleading with her daughter Amina to come home. The girl cried and clung to her boyfriend, Eddie, a college student who lived in the house with his mother and sister.

For a week, Amina, an 18-year-old senior at Lewisville High School, had been living a nightmare. Her father, Yaser Said, had pulled a gun on Christmas Eve and threatened to kill her because of her relationship with Eddie.

"We were going to get engaged and get married," says Eddie, who asked not to be identified by his last name. He loved the beautiful young woman with black hair, green eyes and a burning ambition to do something with her life.

After learning that Amina planned to run away with Eddie, Patricia, who everyone called "Tissie," phoned a family member to find a place to hide. Tissie would leave with Amina and her younger daughter Sarah, 17, who also feared her father. Her brother Islam had told their father that Sarah also had a boyfriend, and Yaser threatened to kill her too.

From the time they were little, Yaser told his daughters they were to have no American boyfriends, ever. Yaser and Islam kept strict watch over the girls to ensure they didn't disobey the command.

Yaser had big plans for both girls. Everything would begin in May, when Amina received her high school diploma. She would get engaged to a man he had chosen for her in Egypt, his birthplace. From the groom, Amina would receive a sizable mahr, the traditional dowry. Yaser had scrimped for years to provide his own contribution to the marriage: a small vacation "chalet" on the seaside in the Sinai.

When Amina, who dreamed of becoming a doctor, asked her father when she would go to college, Yaser had a simple answer: when—if—your husband allows. The same was expected for Sarah.

Amina had no intention of marrying a much older Egyptian man, a stranger, so, on December 26, Tissie, her daughters and their boyfriends fled. They made their way to Attica, a small Kansas town where Tissie's aunt lived. But Amina, who had been offered a scholarship by Texas A&M, knew immediately that Attica wouldn't do. She had to live in a college town.

The group got back on the road and headed to Tulsa, where Eddie had relatives. They planned to get an apartment, find jobs and enroll in school. Their boyfriends would stay with them. "We were going to live with them so they could be safe," says Eric, Sarah's boyfriend.

The group found an apartment; Tissie and Eric got jobs right away while the girls checked out schools. Eddie drove back to Dallas for a DJ job and to get his belongings.

Then Tissie lied.

She told her daughters that December 31 was her deceased mother's birthday and she wanted to drive to East Texas to put flowers on her grave. Driving through Denton to Lewisville, Tissie revealed the truth: She was returning to Yaser.

Reluctantly, Sarah went home with her mother, but Amina refused.

"I'm never going back there," Amina told an aunt. She spent New Year's Eve at Eddie's house.

The calls from her mother started early the next morning, but Amina refused to come home. Finally, Tissie drove the few blocks to Eddie's house and pounded on the door. Amina argued while her mother stood unmoving in the doorway, saying her father had forgiven her.

"She said he just wanted to talk to Amina and that everything was going to be OK," Eddie says. "Amina was crying and didn't want to go, but her mom made her. I trusted her mom to take care of her." So, he backed off.

A few hours later, the bullet-riddled bodies of Amina and Sarah Said were found in a bloody taxi outside an Irving hotel. Yaser Said has disappeared and now is a fugitive, wanted for their murders.

Two funerals were held for the girls. At the Christian ceremony, one of Tissie's aunts walked up to an imam who would officiate at the Muslim service. "This is an honor killing," she yelled in his face. "Don't deny it." The rest of Tissie's family took up the refrain, saying Yaser had killed Amina and Sarah because it was his kinship and religious duty to restore the Said family's reputation, besmirched by the girls' relationships with the two young men.

The Said side, the Egyptians, disagreed. Yaser had just snapped—if indeed he was responsible.

"Only a monster could do that," says one of Yaser's brothers. He points out that when Christian parents kill their children, people rarely blame the killers' religious beliefs.

The Koran condemns the slaying of the innocent, says Imam Zia-ul-Haq Shaikh of the Islamic Center of Irving. Honor killings are committed in many places of the world, by Hindus, Sikhs and Christians as well as Muslims.

Still, news that a Muslim father had been accused of murdering two beautiful daughters because he disapproved of their boyfriends triggered an instantaneous and predictable reaction from non-Muslims: It had to be an "Islamic" honor killing.

I can not help but believe the CIA is hiding this monster. WHY, why else, the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD. Do you remember them raiding the mosque in Dallas arresting Muslims. Ever wonder WHERE did they get the info on that mosque? What if it was provided by Yasser Said, who belonged to the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD.? Would they blink at his murduring, and hide him out, for his help. A B O S U T L Y. How long did it take them to catch Timothy McVeigh ? HU. They hauled him in , and hid him out, where he is still in the witness protection program.

What a tragic, sad end to two beautiful lives. My first three husbands were Arabs, and I too married at the age of 15 to a 22 year old Palestinian. The only smart thing I did in the next 13 years was refuse to get pregnant by any of my husbands. The cultural differences are great, as I learned on my one and only trip to the middle east with my first husband. I feel lucky to have gotten out alive. To some of the posters here: not everyone who marries early is white trash, so I take exception to that. I was accepting the best of two bad situations. Honor killings happen all the time in the middle east. How sad that it happened here and nobody cared to see the signs and remove these girls from the deadly situation they were in. My third husband was a complete psychopath who finally convinced me that it's not a good idea to marry someone from a country where family intermarriage is a long honored custom. If your parents are cousins you are more likely to be insane and do stupid shit like Yaser did. The only good thing that came of this entire thing is that those beautiful girls are no longer living in fear. And yes, I think the mother should be charged as an accessory. Shame on you, Tissie

  • Catch Yaser 08/15/2010 1:06:00 AM

Could you be any more obvious that you are either a Said or one of their friends? To begin, the sexual abuse was real and confirmed by the girls in the year before their murders. The girls themselves told their friends and wrote a letter discussing the years of being whores for Yaser’s personal use. Amina suffered from PTSD as a direct result of Yaser’s sexual abuse. None of this comes from the white trash family, but friends of the girls! Are you going to call the girls liars? Only the Said family tries to act like it was a lie. For your information there is a video, filmed by Yaser himself, trying to look at the girls half clothed and while they were trying to sleep. His son Islam is right there trying to get a good look at his sisters. He pulls their covers off to get a good look at their bodies and focuses in on Sarah’s rear end, even making a comment about her butt. Try again Said! You are trying to protect a pervert! Next, Islam demands a man is responsible for the financial support of his family. Why in the world would you point out the mother never paid the rent? IT WAS YASERS JOB! Yaser took money from his brother for rent. NOT! It was to help with the escape and the rent is the excuse for people finding out his brother gave him money. Next, the condos he built were for him and his son, not the girls. The money used was money that should have been spent to provide for his family, like college for the girls, since Islam was an uneducated loser and drop out. Yes the girls would probably be alive if Patricia had not help set them up. This was no murder on the fly. It was planned months in advance. You people seem to think all Americans are stupid. This was a family killing, Said Family approved. Yaser did not slave away in a cab. He worked nights to get his freak on. He kept every dime he made for HIMSELF! Yaser always had nice clothes, went out to eat and left his family to fend for themselves. They used Islam’s SSI checks to pay rent and the mother paid the rest of the bills. I wonder how many members of the Said Family are collecting SSI? Yaser was a child molesting, self centered lazy PIG! Patricia should also be in jail along with his brothers who helped with the arrangements.

I have come across this horrifying story after reading about another honor killing in Canada. Questions I have 1) It's two years since the killings. Why is there very little update since the middle of 2008? 2) Why aren't the brother and mother arrested? 3) This is a poorly researched article. Not a SINGLE question was posed to the cops by the reporter why they didn't charge the mother as an accessory or charge the brother with threats he is obviously indulging in(it could be after the article, but how about a followup?). 4) The writer was taking the Ahmed's statements at face value. While one can not be 100% sure, there is a good chance Ahmed is spinning away for the media. Why didn't the neices seek his help if he was that open minded considering he seems to be stable, rich and sane? There is eomthing this guy Ahmed is not revealing. He can't bring his brother to justice? 5) Shame on the Islamic Center for spending money on this family's house. I would like to see the paper come up with a followup on this. Why isn't the FBI involved to a greater degree. Also can't the Dallas Observer trace IPs and figure out who left some threatening comments on this site for other readers? Seriously, this is why print journalism is declining. People too lazy to do a thorough job.

This is what happens when White trash dysfunctional woman marries an unstable Muslim immigrant i.e, two dead girls In my opinion, Said was an unstable man, but his psychotic wife deliberately drove him over the edge. Tissie-the mother with her white trash culture is a psycho and is the one primarily responsible for this wreckage of a family. She deliberately pitted the father and her daughters against each other for a deadly outcome. I ask you, how does a mother take her children to the authorities to have them report that their father sexually abused them, than have them recant these horrible allegations, and than makes up with him and goes back to live with him? What kind of a horrible person does that? So this makes me believe that the whole sexual abuse story is a lie, and the mother coached her daughters to make up stories. The only family member who is sexually abused is Tissie by her trashy relatives. How does she not pay the rent for months and almost drive them to loose their home. Meanwhile he is slaving away as a cab driver to support his daughters. he even cooks for them so they can have family dinners. He gave the girls a car so they can go to their after school activities. On the other hand what kind of mother deliberately encourage her underage daughters to have sex with their boyfriends? Answer; a trashy mother. Would good American parents do that? Not the ones I know! This guy never knew what hit him when he married Tissie. He was desperately trying to stop his daughters from becoming like their useless immoral trashy mother and he despaired when he thought they were loosing them. he was trying to take them away from the alcohol filled trashy culture (I don;t mean mainstream Amercian culture, just the trailer park type), in his own clumsy way by arranging for them to marry and live respectable married lives. He could have walked away, but his honor prevented it. Every step of the way, emotionally, culturally and financially, this woman undermined him and destroyed his unstable mind. She too is responsible for these murders just like he is.

I feel that these acts are violent and I agree that here in the USA this is called murder. No excuses because of religion. No religion would stand behind action like these. These sick men have tried to find away to control women and try to justify it by calling it their religion. Thats crap. If they wish to follow that type of religion they should go back to the other countries that don't object to cruel and unusual punishment. Here in te grand ol' USA, you have the right to love anyone of any race and color and make a wonderful life if you wish. You have the right to believe in any religion as long as it does not hurt or endanger anyone else, including your own family members. Again, live here, by OUR laws, leave yours at the border.

There is NO SUCH THING as killing for your religion! There is no such religion when you cause your own flesh and blood pain. That man murdered his daughters because he only knew that he wasn't in control anymore! He's guilty and he can't blame it on religion!

These poor girls are recent casualties of muslim jihad. After Mohammed's death, the jihad of Umar, the second caliph, exploded into the world of the unbelievers. Jihad destroyed a Christian Middle East and a Christian North Africa. Around 60 million Christians were slaughtered during the jihadic conquest. The history of political Islam is the destruction of Christianity in the Middle East, Egypt, Turkey and North Africa. Half of Christianity was lost. Half of the glorious Hindu civilization was annihilated and 80 million Hindus killed. The first Western Buddhists were the Greeks descended from Alexander the Great's army in what is now Afghanistan. Jihad destroyed all of Buddhism along the silk route. About 10 million Buddhists died. The conquest of Buddhism is the practical result of pacifism. Zoarasterianism was eliminated from Persia. The Jews became permanent dhimmis throughout Islam. In Africa over 120 million Christians and animists have died over the last 1400 years of jihad. Approximately 270 million nonbelievers died over the last 1400 years for the glory of political Islam. These are the Tears of Jihad which are not taught in any school.

I was a friend of Amina's. It really upsets me that she and Sarah are portraied as being ungrateful rebellious teenagers at the beginning of this, and you make their father out to be a man who is worried about is daughters. Saying that he was just protecting them. In reallity, he was trying to isolate them, I know because my parents are extremely strict too, and Amina and I would talk about those things. He was crazy and abusive, he cared more about himself and his son then them. And the two girls were very caring, they were desperate to get away from him, and they were constantly threatened. It didn't just start a week before they were killed

  • Vihaya Vomuboh 08/30/2008 9:20:00 AM

Internet blogs say that Sarah told people that she was afraid of her uncles as well as her father. She told them that her uncles may take her away. Yaser has a brother living in the Euless-Bedford area as well as one living in New York. The one in NY has a vile mouth if you watched the latest FOX documentary on honor killing. It seems that they know where Yaser and Islam are hiding. Anyone know if Yaser has any other family here in the U.S.? Wasn't his father living with him as well? Family must be cursed or just evil. There must be a special place in hell reserved for the Said family.

  • John L 07/28/2008 7:01:00 PM

This story is a tragedy where is the state of Texas these girls were abused why were they not protected and if the uncles and grandparents cared for these girls they would have lived in better conditions...I think the state of Texas should also hold some blame those girls suffered for 10 yrs and Texas did not even wonder what happened to them...The articale is very poorly written and I do not think the uncle should be given any consideration he is helping his brother get away with murder!!!!Carrie Hutchinson used a tragedy to get free perks in Texas she should be removed from any type of investigating!!!!Tissie needs to wake up and smell the American Coffee and should be charged as an accessory to child rape...

  • Jeremy 07/17/2008 12:28:00 AM

According to Yasser, it is not ok for the girls to have boyfriends but it is ok for Yasser to rape the girls when they were children. What a beast! Is it any wonder that the Islamic Center would pay to remodel the house of the son who cooperated with the father in terrorizing these girls but wouldn't contribute to the capture reward fund? Islamic Center should be leading the cause to capture Yasser. If Yasser is staying in Egypt, why hasn't the U.S. government pursued him there? He must be brought to justice. This is a story that has captured national and international news.

  • Indga 07/12/2008 5:07:00 AM

American women must learn a lesson from this. No matter how much money Muslim Arabs have or what inducements they offer, Western women should not marry Muslim men. Honor killing is a tribal custom upheld by Islamic theology and sharia law. Christian men do not kill their children to protect "family honor." Honor is a rotten corpse amongst these people, one they are willing to kill and die for. Let them kill each other for honor; do not be part of their families.

  • Carrie Huskinson 06/28/2008 7:20:00 PM

This post is in response to several comments made with regards to this article. The first issue was that I was paid twice for the same work. As with most of the comments found on these particular blogs, the information is false. I was asked to verify weather information provided by an investigator for Atlas Shrugs was true or false. The question involved was if a P.O. Box was opened in Yassers name and that of his brother. I was asked to verify if they both opened the boxes in the same month and year 11/07, and if they were still valid addresses for the men in question. The amount paid was to cover the data base search cost. I was paid no amount of money for time or effort, only the cost of the search, and only by the one person who made the request. I verified the information was inaccurate and false. Despite having this knowledge, it was still posted on the blog both brothers opened P.O. Boxes in the same month and within months of the murders. The second issue was that racial/religious/hate speech whatever slurs were posted on a blog site, as reported. The answer is YES there were. They may not be there anymore, because the site owner adds and removes postings to fit their need and that of others. There has been a daily print off of this site and witnesses who can verify the removal of post. The blogs I have read have contained many falsehoods and inaccurate information, such as blaming Islam for luring his sisters home. As the Observer readers now know, it was the mother who brought Amina home not the brother. Also, that the P.O. Boxes were not opened in 11/07 and are no longer valid addresses. Do not believe everything you read on these private blog sites. You will find them misleading. Very little information is factual and mainly consists of rumor, gossip, opinion and is biased to fit agendas. If you want the truth go to the source, not a blog with the writings of people who base comments on hearsay or those who have never conducted an interview in the case. On a personal note, I have never been accused of improprieties in my entire work history. Never have I had my reputation attacked, as it has been with this story. I refused to join a modern day KKK and support hate speech. As a result of my refusal to work with these people and their organization, I was attacked. I will not report falsehoods as truth to fit a narrow minded hate filled agenda.

The issue here is not about Islam, it is not about culture it is about the breakdown of a family unit and the failure of CPS to get the kids away from these horrible parents. Also the failure of the extended family on both sides, all the warning signs look to have been visiable for years and yet they did nothing. CPS should have removed the children from these parents years ago and when the first hints of abuse were brought up and why did the other relatives do nothing when the abuse was brought to light. It's very easy to label this an honor killing becuase the father was from Egypt and Islam bashing is in vogue these days. But I am sorry this has nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with bad parenting, apathic relatives and the broken CPS system. It is an aweful shame that these two kids will not have a chance to grow up and that this monster has not been brought to justice.

  • Brando 06/23/2008 8:29:00 AM

I think the real take-away of this story is that for younger generations of people from all races, classes, and religions, their views of the world have changed for the better. Two young arab girls and two hispanic guys in love, in a relationship. And then the older generation, the father, screws it all up with hatred, bigotry, and insanity. This is such a horrendous and sad tale but I take from this some hope that the future will be better, once these people like Yaser Said take their old notions with them to their graves. Until then all the hatred being spewed here or there solves nothing and will lead only to further tragedies until earth becomes hell.

Just because a white american marries a muslim the children should not have to be this religion, they are in the U.S.A. now and I wonder why do they come here, they donot like us, our culture, they demand special treatment, their children were american citizens, but he treated them like they were living in Egypt. why can`t these people live like our society, if they didnot want to change their lives why leave Egypt or wherever, we certainly do not need them. I hope they find him and he pays for what he did. I do wonder why Kroger and the others who remodeled the house for sweet little Islam and his new bride from Egypt. were thinking. wasn`t a good idea. he dosen`t deserve help.

Yeah their the crazy ones...in unrelated news American troops killed 100 Iraqi babies today and raped 5 Iraqi girls.

"The Koran condemns the slaying of the innocent, says Imam Zia-ul-Haq Shaikh of the Islamic Center of Irving. Honor killings are committed in many places of the world, by Hindus, Sikhs and Christians as well as Muslims." Expound on it Imam, the girls are no longer "innocent" once they have talked to or held hands with or whatever with a non-Muslim. Therefore the father can kill them with no or little penalty under Sharia law. And the papers are just overflowing with all those Christian "honor killings." Sure, Imam, happens all the time. Lies, Lies, and More Lies.

If you take the time to read the Koran you will find that Mohammed was just as bad as the father in this case. Mohammed is the exemplar by which every Muslim is to live his life and thus the root of the problem.

It's just a cultural thing. Let's just accept that all "cultures" are OK and get used to it. What a bunch of PC - muliti-culti dung. Even the girls could see how those who follow the Religion of Peace (Islam) treat their women at their young age and wanted nothing to do with it. It wasn't that they were concerned about being Egyptian....it was the religion that they shunned. Interesting how the "dropped charges" when they were kids came up in their teens again when they became sexually active. And that is what infuriates me (almost as much as the murderous mohammedan who commited this atrocity on his own daughters)is that these two wonderful young ladies were in trouble for over a decade and no one - not their mother (bring her in for questioning, a polygraph and intense scrutiny), brother (same as for the mother), school officials (didn't anyone - teachers/administrators/guidance couselors see the abuse?), law enforcement (restraining orders, sexual abuse charges, missing persons reports, etc), no one could connect the dots and see that these two wonderful young ladies were in imminent danger? May they rest in peace. May the rest of the players in this terrible tragedy outlined above be destined to live their lives in a constant state of fear, anxiety and turmoil that these two angels had to endure for their short lives. Anyone from the Dallas police checked that seaside abode yet? Thanks to the Observer and Atlas Shruggs for keeping this story alive. Can't wait to see when Yasser gets fried for this!

"It's only tradition. It's the mentality of women as property." So we should not condemn this tradition even though its pandemic in Islamic society? I don't need an Imam to tell me what religion this barbarian adhered to.

You forgot "Blame" if the women followed the rules, this would have never happened. Someone needs to tell these Muslim beasts from the mid-east, that if you have a daughter who is born a US citizen, she is just that, a US citizen. not chattel. If I were the daughter of Yaser's brother, I'd be shaken in my booties, because she may have the right to refuse marriage to an old Muslim pervert daddy has picked out for, but so did Amina. and where is she right now?

  • Joel 06/20/2008 9:51:00 PM

Whether honor killings are required by Islam or not, the article shows that such killings are tolerated in Muslim societies like Egypt but condemned in Christian societies like ours (used to be).

This whole story, as sad as it is has very little to do with Islam. When a WT 15 year old with no education marries a 30 year old, regardless of his background, the situation is going to be F'D up. IMO this woman shares an EQUAL burden in the death of her daughters. I despise people that CHOOSE to be ignorant and stupid, NOTHING GOOD IN LIFE COMES WITHOUT EFFORT. She chose to drop out of school and not get an education, she chose to get pregnant wihtout the proper means of finacial support. She chose to lie to her daughters that put them in a situation to where these kids where GOING to get shot by their obviously mentally disturbed father. This woman should should be in jail!

So let me get this right. The girls ran away because they were convinced that their father was going to kill them. There were other reasons, but the main one was the fact that they feared for their lives. So the mother that they trusted tricks them into coming home. Then their father kills them both. Wow. How is the mother not considered legally culpable in some way? She knew what that maniac was capable of and yet she still lured them right back into the lion's den. She is not without blame.

Qur'an 4:15 "And as for those who are guilty of an indecency from among your women, call to witnesses against them four from among you; then if they bear witness confine them to the houses until death takes them away or Allah opens some way for them." It has everything to do with Islam. Islam is a totalitarian political system disguised as a religion.

  • Joe 06/20/2008 6:32:00 PM

Islam, the real gutter religion. Where are the millions of American muslims marching in the streets to condemn "honor" killing by muslims? Probably too tired from their marches condemning the 9/11 attacks...

What a tragic, horrendous story. It reads like Shakespeare: fascinating and revolting all at once. Yaser Said is a sick, deranged man, and what he did, he will do again. I pity those that harbor him, if there are any. Honor killings are real, but this was so much more and less than that. No rational person can leave this at the door of Islam. Yaser's sickness is found all over the world, throughout all strata of society and religion. It is truly sad that Yaser's desire for power led him to make such poor decisions, decisions that ruined not only his own life, but also destroyed his family. The way I see it, there are two things left for us to do: 1) bring this man to justice (or find the remains of his suicide) and 2) seek to protect those that we can protect from people like Yaser Said. *Special thanks to Glenna Whitley for such a compelling and informative article.

    A religion of peace.

  • Jack H. 06/20/2008 2:19:00 AM

Get used to this kind of stuff from the Muslims. Suppression of women, assertion of Islam as reason to do what every they want, denial, childlike reasoning, circular logic etc. They do this in their own countries every day.
