The Modern in Fort Worth continues its Magnolia at the Modern series this weekend with And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007). From director Anand Tucker (Shopgirl), the film captures a man's reflections on his family and upbringing while his father lies on his deathbed. Based on Blake Morrison's memoir of the same name, the film stars fantastic British character actor Jim Broadbent (best known as Bridget Jones' dad; he'll also play Horace Slughorn in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) as the father and fan fave Colin Firth as Morrison. I can't imagine two better actors to play sympathetic characters, nor can I imagine two more sympathetic characters for them to play. We've all had complicated experiences with family, death and reflection, much of it filled with frustration, contradiction and doubt -- just as Morrison experiences in his book, and this film. Perhaps this story itself is unique, but its message is also universal. But fair warning: Two fine actors backed by an excellent cast exploring the highs and lows of life, death and the human experience? Bring a big ol' box of tissues. The Magnolia is located at 3200 Darnell St. in Fort Worth. Visit themodern.org/magnolia.html for showtimes and ticket information.
Sat., July 5, 2 & 5 p.m.; Sun., July 6, 2 & 4 p.m., 2008
